A 4-yr-old boy has had vomiting and diarrhea for 4 days. He now has had 24 hr of abdominal pain that appears maximal in the lower abdomen. His temperature is 38.4°C; WBC count, 9,400/cu mm with 75 PMNs and 20 lymphocytes; hematocrit, 36; and platelet count, 160,000/cu mm. Urinalysis is normal, with the exception of 3+ ketonuria. He has mild tenderness in both lower quadrants, normal rectal examination, and mild muscular guarding in the lower quadrants. The most likely diagnosis is:  

a) Intussusception  

b) Viral gastroenteritis  

c) Appendicitis  

d) Bacterial enteritis  

e) Henoch-Schönlein purpura
